Secondary Applications: One Week Until 31 October Deadline
A dated reminder for September 2027 entry: check your council application before 31 October 2026, with clear next steps for selective-school families.
Families applying for state secondary places for September 2027 entry have one week until Saturday 31 October 2026, the closing date confirmed on Harrow Council’s current application page. This 24 October update highlights an approaching deadline, not a newly introduced admissions rule.
This deadline concerns the current application cycle for school entry in September 2027. It is not the registration deadline for children preparing to take their 11-plus exams in 2027. Those families need the official timetable for their own test and entry years.
What the official sources confirm
GOV.UK’s admissions guidance gives 31 October as the secondary application deadline and directs families to their home council’s process, including for schools in another council area. It also says parents should list schools in preference order; naming only one does not improve the chance of an offer there.
Hertfordshire’s current timetable independently confirms 31 October 2026 for applications and 1 March 2027 as allocation day. Council procedures for late applications and supporting evidence need separate checking; do not assume every area handles them identically.
Why the reminder matters after an entrance test
Completing test arrangements and submitting school preferences are separate items to check. Treat a results email as information for your decisions, rather than assuming it proves that a council application has been submitted. Our practical recommendation is to verify the application itself in the relevant council system.
The approaching deadline also received national reporting on 21 October. This report uses official guidance for the instructions above and limits its scope to England; it does not adopt a single nationwide portal closing time or extend an English timetable to every UK system.
A submission check for this week
- 1Open your home council’s current secondary application page and confirm that it covers September 2027 entry. Check its precise submission instructions and closing time.
- 2Review the order of your preferences and each school’s own admissions information. Keep any separate school forms or evidence requirements on your checklist.
- 3Check the application’s submitted status and retain its confirmation or reference. A saved draft should not be assumed to be a submitted application.
- 4If you discover a problem or cannot meet a requirement, contact the council promptly and read its late-application guidance. Do not conclude that a late application is automatically impossible.
If your child’s test is in 2027
Keep this story as an example of why test and entry years need separate diary labels. Do not copy 31 October 2026 into a plan for a future admissions cycle. Start with the target school or consortium and record the dates it actually publishes; label future unannounced details as unconfirmed.
Our exam dates and admissions hub links related coverage. For the longer process, read when to apply for grammar-school places and registering for the 11 Plus. Those guides explain different tasks; neither replaces your council’s live submission instructions.
Sources checked 24 October 2026: GOV.UK, Harrow and Hertfordshire official pages, plus the 21 October reporting linked above. No extension, individual offer prediction or new policy announcement is claimed.
